Japanese car maker Toyota Corp. has reaffirmed its commitment to work in Britain, following a newspaper reported that it may halt the country’s car industry, due to London’s plans to switch faster to fully electric cars, Bloomberg News reported on Sunday.
The Japanese car company said it was ready to sell zero-emissions cars, and reiterated its view that hybrid cars have a role in the transition process by 2035, as Britain prepares to set new targets for the car industry.
The company said in an emailed statement that it is focused on achieving a sustainable and long-term future in Europe, including with regard to its factories in Britain.
The company was responding to a report by the British newspaper “Sunday Times” that it had warned Transport Minister Grant Shapps that it might halt its manufacturing operations in Britain.
