The emergency services of Picardy Wallonia were alerted on Sunday, at 6:43 p.m., that an accident involving a car and a train had taken place in Estaimbourg, in the Estaimpuis entity. Coming from Tournai, an extrication vehicle was dispatched to the scene. A SMUR and an ambulance from Mouscron also intervened at the scene of the collision.
The accident occurred at rue de Tournai, at level crossing 11 of the 75A railway line. Coming from Tournai, the train heading for Mouscron collided with a car crossing this level crossing with barriers. It is unclear at this time whether these barriers were raised or lowered.
“Under the violence of the impact, the driver of the car was ejected and was killed instantly. The victim was alone in his vehicle, ”indicated shortly before 8 p.m. Captain Grégory Petit, who led the intervention.
An investigation by the railway police should try to determine the exact causes of this fatal accident.
A replacement bus service has been set up between Tournai and Mouscron stations.
