On this weekend of departure on vacation, the federal police call on motorhome owners to be vigilant. Checks are organized this Saturday: the agents check that the vehicles are not overloaded, which can lead to an accident.
They parade on the scale, the owners of mobile homes and caravans leaving for a few days of vacation. Some are checked by the federal police and others come spontaneously to have their vehicle checked. This is the case of Maurice who comes to make sure he hits the road in complete safety. “By doing this, I know exactly what weight I can put in it”he points out.
Tire pressure, general condition and loading are also checked during this check. “We can load a maximum of one meter at the back”, recalls Daniel De Neve, head of the Battice road police station. The weight of the front and rear axles cannot exceed the maximum vehicle load.
It is necessary to make these checks before leaving: poorly maintained caravans or poorly distributed weights are real dangers on the road. The hitch may sway and spin out of control. If ever the situation arises for one of the 100,000 mobile homes registered in Belgium, a reflex is to have: above all, do not brake. “It is the opposite that must be done, explains Daniel De Neve. You have to accelerate so that the oscillation will go more and more and the caravan will get back in line.”
