Pfizer-BioNTech has authorized an additional dose of Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines for emergency use in this age group and for certain younger people with severely compromised immune systems.

Later that same day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the additional vaccine as an option, stopping short of urging eligible people to rush in and get it right away.

“The boosters are safe, and people over 50 can now receive an additional booster 4 months following their previous dose to further increase their protection. This is especially important for people 65 and over and those over 50 and more with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk of serious illness from COVID-19, as they are most likely to benefit from an additional booster dose at this time,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, Director of the CDC. in a press release. “The CDC, together with the FDA and our public health partners, will continue to evaluate the need for additional booster doses for all Americans.”

Dr. Peter Marks, head of vaccines at the FDA, said there is evidence that vaccine protection may decline over time, especially in higher risk groups, and that another booster will help increase the protection of those at higher risk.

According to CDC data, 97.4 million Americans have received a booster dose of a coronavirus vaccine and 217.5 million have been fully vaccinated.

The Biden administration has urged people to be “up to date” with their vaccines – especially amid the winter surge of the omicron variant – and two shots and a booster still offer strong protection once morest serious illness and death.

With cases significantly lower since January, state and local leaders have moved to reverse or ease pandemic restrictions, hoping to return to ‘normal’.”

The Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center recorded 23,643 new cases and 961 new deaths in the past day – even with reported vaccinations at the lowest levels since 2020.

However, with the spread of the even more communicable disease.2 subvariant omicron and the White House signaling a lack of funding for the fourth vaccines, the future of the pandemic in the United States remains uncertain.

Scientists predicted that new variants would spread, although experts questioned the need for additional boosters.

Dr Anthony Fauci told the BBC last weekend that Americans should be prepared for new COVID-19 restrictions, warning that health officials are witnessing similar conditions in the United States and Europe.

He had already said this month that he did not expect another flare-up. Video

Additionally, two doses of the vaccine were nearly 80% effective once morest needing a ventilator or dying during the omicron surge. The CDC recently said a recall increased that protection to 94%.

Vaccine efficacy was lowest in immunocompromised individuals. Although the FDA cited data from Israel for its action, it’s not yet clear how long any additional benefit from another recall would last, with Marks saying higher-risk Americans may need a another dose in the fall if the vaccine is adapted to the current viral threats.
