During the broadcasts of the ceremony of the WWE Hall of Fame 2022 via WWE Network and Peacock, the legend Mark Calaway (The Undertaker) made his induction speech to the company’s hall of fame.
After the introduction of Vince McMahon, “The Deadman” went out before the public of Houston, Texas who received him with a loud ovation of regarding ten minutes. “For the last thirty years, my identity has been The Undertaker. Tonight, I want to open the curtain and let you meet the man behind it.With these words, Mark Calaway began an extensive speech in which he mentioned important aspects of his life, starting with the day he decided to start his career as a professional wrestler.
Mark recognized important people in his career and life. People like the McMahon family, his backstage bandmates BSK, Paul Bearer, Kane and costume designer Terry Anderson. As well extended his words to Triple H and Shawn Michaels, with whom he put together the series of clashes at WrestleMania that marked the so-called “End of an Era”. As a final thank you, he referred to his sons and daughters, his parents, and his wife Michelle McCool.
“In addition to the movements in the ring, I learned three moves that helped me throughout my career“, Calaway told the audience. “The first is to learn that reality is undeniable. The second is to be respectful to everyone. And the third is to always seek the highest possible height. It is thanks to these three moves that I am here tonight.” After finishing his speech, and as a gesture of appreciation to the public, Mark put on his characteristic costume of The Undertaker and expressed the phrase “never say never”.
The Undertaker closes a cycle of more than 30 years
Mark Calaway’s beginnings in professional wrestling are in the mid 80’s. After what Mark himself described as “a poor upbringing” training under Buzz Sawyer, the wrestler made his WCCW debut as the masked Texas Red. After holding various characters in smaller companies, Calaway debuted in WCW during 1989. Under the name ” Mean Mark” Callous, the fighter became part of several pay-per-views before starting talks with Vince McMahon in 1990.
On November 22, 1990 at Survivor Series, Mark Calaway was introduced to the WWF cameras as The Undertaker. The character quickly gained notoriety, to the point of lifting the World Championship just four months following his debut. From here on, his rivalries would begin to catapult him as a recognizable icon beyond the followers of what is now known as WWE.
Undertaker is a seven-time world champion, as well as a multiple-time tag team champion with partners like Kane, The Rock and Steve Austin. But the greatest merit of “The Deadman” in the company is his historic winning streak at WrestleMania. The fighter had 21 consecutive victories until 2014, marking a total of 25 victories and two defeats to date in the great event. On November 22, 2020 in Survivor Series, “The Deadman” made his retirement official exactly 30 years later of his debut in the company.
