(CNN) — US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) told CNN in a statement that its Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands office was involved in the rescue of six migrants on Thursday. at night off the Florida Keys, along with local and national law enforcement and protection agencies.
According to the CBP statement, the agency worked with the United States Coast Guard, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to rescue migrants from a rustic boat that capsized near Sugarloaf Key.
According to the CBP statement, all six survivors claimed to be Cuban citizens and were immediately transported to the Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West, Florida, to undergo evaluation and treatment. CBP said local police removed the body of a deceased man from the vessel which was then taken to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s office, according to the release.
In its statement, CBP said an active search and rescue is underway because, according to surviving migrants, there are still more people missing from the capsized boat.
