Rajya Sabha elections: Congress defection in Assam; BJP wins 2 seats National | Deshabhimani

In Assam, the BJP won all the two seats in the Rajya Sabha elections following the Congress-led MLAs voted once morest it. With this, the BJP has crossed 100 members in the Rajya Sabha. The Congress will have 29 members in the Rajya Sabha by the end of this month.

In Assam, at least eight Congress MLAs voted once morest. The NDA has 82 members in the 126 – member assembly. However, BJP candidates Pabitra Margarita got 46 votes and Rungvra Nursery got 44 votes. Congress candidate Ripun Borai was expected to get 44 votes. Total received ‌ 35 votes. The opposition has 27 members from the Congress, 17 from the AIUDF, one from the CPI (M) and one from the RJD. Congress MLA Siddiqui Ahmed has been suspended from the party for non-compliance with the whip. His vote was invalid because he wrote ‘One’ on the ballot paper instead of ‘1’. In the defeat, the Congress and the AIUDF blamed each other.

The BJP has won four of the 13 Rajya Sabha seats across the country. In Punjab, AAP won all the five seats. The CPI (M), the CPI, the Congress and the UPPL (BJP ally in Assam) won each seat.
