KHNP’s reappointment as president virtually canceled… Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy not requesting a second term

The reappointment of President Jeong Jae-hoon of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, which had sparked a controversy over the ‘recruitment’, has practically been canceled.

According to government officials on the 1st, it is known that the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has not yet made a request for the reappointment of President Jung. President Jung took office in April 2018 and ended his three-year term last year.

In January, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy notified KHNP of President Chung’s reappointment of one year, and KHNP held a board of directors and general meeting of shareholders and passed a bill for the reappointment of President Jung. As a result, President Jung’s one-year reappointment only remains with the request of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Blue House approval process.

However, as the Ministry of Industry and Trade did not go through the process of requesting a re-appointment, and as the next 2-3 days are the weekend, President Jeong’s term is expected to expire as it is. However, in principle, President Jung will hold the position until a successor president is appointed.

Government officials have pointed out that President Jung’s reappointment is a ‘recruitment’ at the end of the administration’s term, and it is believed that the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has suspended the procedures related to the reappointment. President Jung is indicted by the prosecution following being accused of manipulating the economic evaluation of Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 under the direction of former Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Baek Un-gyu.

The Presidential Takeover Committee also criticized the controversy over President Jung’s attempt to reappointment. At a briefing on the same day, the elected spokesperson Kim Eun-hye emphasized, “The future direction we have in personnel management is common sense, fairness and morality.” On the same day, the People’s Power also held a press conference, criticizing President Jung as an ‘Park Ki’ greeting and urging him to resign.
