After years of speculation, it’s now official! The Toyota GR Corolla 2023 will be marketed in Canada. From the racing stables GAZOO Racing from Toyota, the GR Corolla brings a whole new dimension to the Corolla, it becomes the most powerful and the most efficient Toyota Corolla ever produced.
In an industry still dominated by new SUVs, it’s refreshing to see emotionally-rich new vehicles. The great boss of Toyota Akio Toyoda was very proud to endorse the launch of the GR Corolla, a compact sports car that will enrich the Corolla range.
At the heart of the performance of the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla is a turbocharged 1.6-litre 3-cylinder engine that develops 300 horsepower and produces 273 lb-ft of torque. It’s actually the same G16E-GTS engine found under the hood of the GR Yaris. The engineers simply made a few modifications to it to increase its power, in particular with the addition of an exclusive and less restrictive triple exhaust.
Customizable all-wheel drive
The engine is mated to the only transmission offered, an intelligent 6-speed manual (iMT) that includes a “ Rev Hang » for maintaining revolutions per minute. The car is also equipped with intelligent all-wheel drive that gives you a choice of power distribution between the front and rear wheels, 60/40, 50/50 and 70/30. The vehicle is also equipped with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential.
Two versions offered
The Toyota GR Corolla 2023 will be hand-assembled at the Toyota GR plant in Motomachi, Japan, the birthplace of the Lexus LFA, Supra A80 and GR Yaris. The GR Corolla will be sold in two versions, Core and Circuit Edition. The Core livery will be available in white, black and Supersonic red. As for the Toyota GR Corolla Circuit Edition, this is a limited edition version that will not be available until 2023. It includes a carbon roof, additional air intakes on the hood and a more aileron. imposing at the back.
In terms of design, the exterior and interior of the vehicle were inspired by racing cars. The engineers wanted to make it a very light car so that it might get the most out of the 3-cylinder engine. The manufacturer has used aluminum in the design of the doors and the hood, in particular. The aerodynamics have also been worked on meticulously in order to optimize its performance.
Canadian pricing for the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla will be announced at a later date.
RPM’s opinion
This is a high-performance version of the Corolla that is a latecomer to the sport-compact segment, especially a few weeks following the announcement of the removal of the Subaru WRX STI. The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla will still be able to compete with the Volkswagen Golf R and the Honda Civic Type R. Above all, it might well put an end to the dull and boring image always associated with Corolla for years.
