The draw that will determine the fate of the Korean national football team, led by coach Paulo Bento, for the 2022 Qatar World Cup finals is approaching.
The FIFA World Cup 2022 group draw ceremony will be held at the Doha Convention Center in Qatar at 1 am (Korean time) on the 2nd.
In the World Cup finals, 32 countries that have passed the regional qualifiers for each continent will be divided into 8 groups and 4 teams will play in the group stage.
29 teams have been confirmed to advance to the finals, including Korea, who finished second in Group A in the Asian final qualifying round. The remaining three teams will be decided in June through the European playoffs (PO) postponed due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, intercontinental POs in Asia and South America, and intercontinental POs in North Central America and Oceania.
The teams in the finals are divided in the order of FIFA rankings. Qatar, which automatically receives the top seed as the host country, and the top 7 teams in the rankings receive the top seed (pot 1), and then divide into 8 teams in the order of highest ranking to receive ports 2-4.
Korea, ranked 29th in the FIFA rankings, was assigned to port 3.
Port 1 included Qatar, Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain and Portugal. Port 2 includes Mexico, the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Uruguay, Switzerland, the United States and Croatia.
Port 3 includes Korea, Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Serbia, Poland and Tunisia, while Port 4 includes Cameroon, Canada, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, and three teams to be confirmed in June. .
Since one team from each port enters the group, the same pot cannot be in the same group. Thanks to this, Korea avoided tricky teams such as Senegal, Poland and Serbia in Port 3.
Also, with the exception of Europe, no teams from the same continent are in a group. Therefore, Korea is not included in the same group as Qatar in Port 1 and Saudi Arabia in Port 4.
It is not easy to meet any team in the top seed. It doesn’t make much sense to count the number of cases. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, they produced a 2-0 victory over Germany in Port 1, the ‘Miracle of Kazan’, but to be honest, there are a lot of teams ahead of Korea.
For port 2, the United States and Denmark are worth trying. On the other hand, if you meet the Netherlands and Germany, which are not strange even in port 1, you can become a ‘group of death’.
Port 4 also has a variable. Canada and Ecuador are relatively easy teams to face in the World Cup finals.
On the other hand, if you play once morest Wales or Ukraine, which can rise according to the PO result, it will be difficult to enter the second place in the group.
