The event won’t even have a digital version.
The rumor had been circulating for a few months already: despite the lull in the coronavirus epidemic, E3 2022 would not take place. In question: still significant health risks in the United States, and a clientele less and less interested in organizing a massive event. The organizers had turned very early to the organization of a digital version with a series of online announcements.
In the end, none of that. The organizers of the event have confirmed that the video game fair will not be held in 2022. So no fair in Los Angeles, nor an online show for that matter.
If no reason is given, the pure and simple cancellation of the show suggests that the organizers have not managed to convince all the publishers to participate in the event. For several years, the show had been shunned by several players. Sony and Electronic Arts had thus chosen to organize their own events online. The bulk of the show was no longer provided by a handful of players, such as Ubisoft or Microsoft. Only here, a few weeks ago already, the rumor evoked the organization of a Ubisoft event, outside of E3. Microsoft was also presumed to be hosting a show, also on a separate date.
The success of the Summer Game Fest, organized by journalist Geoff Keighley, certainly did not make things easier for the organizers. Last year, his evening had brought together several hundred thousand spectators online, and stole the show at the show. This year once more, the event is also set for June 2022.
