Belinda Bencic (WTA 28) lost Thursday in the Miami Masters 1000 semi-final once morest Japan’s Naomi Osaka (WTA 77) in three sets 6-4 3-6 4-6.

The Saint-Galloise was however off to a good start once morest the former world No. 1. She relied on a good first ball and managed to asphyxiate Osaka on her 2nd ball in the first set. In this round, the Japanese won only 18% of the points behind her second serve.

But that stat didn’t survive in the next set where Osaka served better. A set where Bencic mostly missed opportunities on break points, only managing to convert one out of six, while his opponent won two games on the two break points offered to him by the Swiss.

The last set was hotly contested between two players who didn’t give up. Osaka escaped to lead 5-2, yet Bencic managed to come back to 4-5. But, on her last service game, the Japanese concluded the set to win following 2 hours and 5 minutes of play.
