Mauritanian president tasks Ould Bilal with forming new government

AA / Nouakchott / Mohamed Al-Bakai

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani on Wednesday instructed resigning Prime Minister Mohamed Ould Bilal to form a new government.

This decision comes the day following Ould Bilal resigned from his post as Prime Minister, following criticism of the performance of his government addressed on Tuesday by President Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

“In accordance with a decree issued today, Wednesday, Mohamed Ould Bilal has been appointed Prime Minister,” the Mauritanian presidency said in a statement.

While Ould Bilal declared, in a speech broadcast on state television, that he welcomed President Ould Ghazouani’s decision to entrust him with forming the new government, and that he had an exchange with him on the evaluation of the performance of the resigning government.

Ould Bilal pledged to “form a government close to the citizens”.

He had formed his resigning government on August 9, 2020, to succeed Ismail Ould Cheikh Sidiya.

President Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani criticized the government’s performance on Thursday and called on it to “show responsibility and strive to fulfill its duty.”

In a speech at the graduation ceremony for a promotion of executives from the National School of Administration (public) in the capital, Nouakchott, he said that “most ministries suffer from ‘a lack of mechanisms to solve citizens’ problems.’

And to add: “It is unacceptable. There is a great lack of control over public services.”

Mauritania suffers from insufficient basic services, including lack of drinking water, frequent power cuts and poor performance of hospitals and health centres.
