In June of last year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government imposed an administrative suspension of operation for 8 months on HDC Hyundai Development Company in connection with the collapse of a demolished building in Gwangju, which killed nine citizens.

In September last year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government decided to suspend business following submitting opinions and hearings in response to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s request for an administrative disposition from the city of Seoul.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government stated that the reason for the disposition was that Hyundai Development Company provided the cause of the collapse of the structure by constructing it differently from the decommissioning plan, and that it was violated even though it had an obligation to manage and supervise the site.

Hyundai Development Company is prohibited from engaging in business activities as a construction company, such as participating in bidding, for eight months following receiving administrative disposition.

However, construction work that has been started by signing a contract before receiving administrative disposition or obtaining permission in accordance with relevant laws and regulations may continue.

Separately, the city of Seoul plans to review strong measures, including cancellation of registration, in relation to the apartment collapse in Hwajeong-dong, Gwangju.
