Alone and scared. This is how Luno is, a dog which has been held since March 14 at customs at Barajas airport in Madrid. The pet traveled with its owner to the Spanish capital from Costa Rica, with an updated and complete health card, but without a microchip.
The microchip is not mandatory in some countries, but in Spain it is. The airport veterinarian, seeing that Luno did not have it, ended up detaining him and denying him entry into the country.
“The Ministry of Agriculture and the Subdirectorate General for Sanitary Agreements and Border Control have simply denied the administrative regularization of the animal without observing the alternatives provided for in the European Regulation on the transport of pet animals”affirms the Animalist Party (PACMA)
The dog Luno is alone, without his owner, but his basic needs are being attended to by Barajas airport staff. He is isolated and without contact with the owner or another familiar person.
The owner of Luno does not see a reshipment to the country of origin as a viable solution because, according to Pacma, she is not in conditions to travel. PACMA asked the Ministry of Agriculture solve this situation and avoid a fatal outcome that would be the sacrifice of the little dog.
The requirements for traveling with animals vary enormously depending on the country, which is why PACMA insists that “those who are harmed are the animals in case of recklessness.” For this reason, he warns that it is very important to be cautious and formally informed when traveling by plane, especially if it is international flights.
