French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Tuesday that an investigation had been launched into the recent violent unrest in the Paris suburb of Severan, during which police were attacked by a group of youths.
The unrest in Sifran comes less than two weeks before the French presidential election, which will highlight voters’ fears of violent crime, ethnic tensions and terrorism.
“An investigation is underway into the police intervention last Saturday followingnoon in Sifrane, 16 people were arrested at the weekend following acts of violence and vandalism, and the police arrested 13 on Monday evening,” the French minister said on Twitter.
Stéphane Blanchett, mayor of Severan, north-east of Paris, wrote on his Twitter account that the unrest first erupted at the weekend, following a 33-year-old died following being shot by police.
French media reports said that the police opened fire on him, following they chased following him on suspicion of stealing a car.
Pictures posted on social media showed young men clashing with the police at the weekend and in the following days.
