Belgians don’t forget barrier gestures: here are the habits that have taken root in us with covid-19

Covid-19 hasn’t been the number one talking point lately. In code yellow, Belgium has lifted almost all of the health restrictions in force. This can lead to a loss of the reflexes that we had developed, especially with regard to barrier gestures. But in reality, Belgians are generally inclined to continue these efforts that have been in place for 2 years now.

This is what emerges from a survey conducted by UC Louvain. Two barrier gestures have thus visibly imposed themselves on everyone and remain well applied in our country today. “Hand washing continues to be well respected, by 2/3 of people”says Olivier Luminet, professor at the Faculty of Psychology at UC Louvain. “It’s the easiest to apply compared to the others, which are starting to be more and more difficult. People are getting more and more tired of adopting them”he then analyzes.

According to him, the ventilation of the premises is also something that has become essential in our daily lives. A measure which, according to Olivier Luminet, must become a habit. “It is important to register it in a sustainable way. Ventilation is a very effective measure and which is not psychologically costly. Awareness campaigns would undoubtedly be interesting to carry out”he replies, announcing that a large third of the population did not respect this measure.

On the other hand, social distancing, limiting contact and wearing a mask tend to disappear from our daily lives. The Belgians would also have a good perception of the risks, which should make it easier to apply them once more if the situation were to impose it.
