The population of Geneva will continue to increase until 2050, the cantonal statistics office announced on Monday. According to its demographic projections, between 72,000 and 151,000 new inhabitants are expected at the end of the lake on this horizon, an increase of 14% to 30%. According to the medium scenario, the threshold of 600,000 inhabitants will be reached in 2044. At the earliest, this should happen in 2038, at the latest in 2050. This growth will depend above all on the level of immigration, notes Ocstat – which observes that the people arriving in the canton being generally rather young, this movement will contribute to the rejuvenation of the population and the increase in the level of fertility.

Whatever the scale of immigration, the aging of the population is inevitable, due to the effect of the baby boom of the 1940s and 1960s. The population of people aged 65 and over will pass the 100,000 unit mark by 2030, and the number of Geneva residents over the age of 80 should double by 2050.
