Russia unhappy with Japan sanctions over suspected military exercises on disputed islands

Japan imposed sanctions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and strengthened solidarity with Europe and the United States. Japanese media reported that it was judged that Russia intended to express a rebound. Except for the announcement on the 21st that it would suspend the negotiations on the Japan-Russia peace treaty, it was suspected of holding military exercises on the disputed islands of the two sides on the 25th.

According to Japanese media reports, it was judged that Russia intends to counter Japan’s sanctions. In addition to the announcement on the 21st to suspend the Japan-Russia peace treaty negotiation, it is suspected of holding military exercises on the disputed islands of the two sides on the 25th. Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the Russian military’s Eastern Military Region, which administers the Far East, said on the 25th that it had held military exercises involving more than 3,000 people in the Kuril Islands.

The Russian military continued to strengthen its armaments on the islands of Etou and Kunou, which Japan called, and it was judged that the exercise may be carried out on the northern territories claimed by Japan (this area is disputed territory between Japan and Russia).

As a retaliatory measure for Japan’s sanctions, Russia announced on the 21st that it would suspend peace treaty negotiations with Japan (including the issue of the Northern Territory).

Japan has confirmed at the Group of Seven (G7) leaders meeting on the 24th that it is ready to impose sanctions on Russia once more; in the face of Japan’s strengthening of solidarity with the United States and European countries, it is judged that Russia’s military exercise intends to express a rebound.

Kyodo News reported that the Russian military mobilized hundreds of military vehicles to participate in this exercise, including anti-landing operations.

The Russian foreign ministry criticized Japan for citing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a reason for its sanctions, stating that “under such conditions, it is impossible to discuss the signing of documents important for (Russia-Japan) relations”.
