The UN Security Council held a meeting to discuss additional sanctions over North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile and ICBM launch.
There were high voices calling for stronger sanctions once morest North Korea, led by the United States, but the adoption of the condemnation statement was canceled due to opposition from China and Russia.

An emergency public meeting of the UN Security Council convened five years following North Korea’s ICBM launch.
Members of the United States and Britain agreed that North Korea’s launch was a clear violation of the UN sanctions once morest North Korea.
He also emphasized that the existing sanctions once morest North Korea must be firmly implemented.

“The United States will propose to strengthen sanctions once morest North Korea through the revision of Chapter 7 of the Security Council resolution.”
However, China and Russia have opposed the tightening of sanctions, arguing that the US is also responsible for North Korea’s ICBM launch.

“The United States must not ignore North Korea’s legitimate demands. It must make attractive offers to resume dialogue with North Korea.”
After the public meeting, the members discussed in a closed meeting how to issue a statement condemning North Korea, but ultimately failed to overcome opposition from China and Russia.
Accordingly, measures to strengthen sanctions once morest North Korea are expected to be discussed at a future Security Council meeting.
At a press conference following the meeting, UN ambassadors from South Korea, the United States and Japan criticized North Korea for continuing to advance its nuclear program, but the Security Council is silent.
He also described the North Korean ICBM launch as “a violation of Security Council resolutions and a threat to the international community as a whole.”
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Defense has withheld the evaluation of whether the North’s missile is a ‘Hwasong-17’, saying it is “still analyzing information.”
