A Russian-born Ukrainian figure skater was expelled from the national team following liking an Instagram post supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation (UFSF) announced on its official website on the 23rd (local time) that Anastasia Shabotova, 16, will be disqualified from the national team.

According to Ukrainian media such as Espresso News, Shabotova ‘liked’ the Instagram post of former Russian figure skater Yevgeny Plushenko, who supported the invasion of Ukraine.

In connection with the invasion of Ukraine on the 6th, Plushenko wrote, “I am proud to be a Russian people,” and “This is an essential operation. The sports world in both countries is really complicated.”

In response, the UFSF condemned Shabotova’s actions and imposed a ‘expulsion from the national team’ disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, Shabotova played for the Russian national team until 2019, but following changing her nationality to Ukraine, she was selected for the Ukrainian national team.
