(New York = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kang Gun-taek = UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on the 24th (local time) that “I strongly condemn North Korea’s today’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch.”
“This launch is a violation of North Korea’s 2018 moratorium on this kind of thing and a clear violation of the Security Council resolution,” Guterres said in a statement through spokesperson Stephan Dujarric on the same day.
“This long-range missile launch risks creating a significant escalation of tension in the region,” he said.
In addition, Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed his promise to “work with all parties in the pursuit of a peaceful and diplomatic solution for the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” Dujarik said.
Earlier, North Korea test-fired an ICBM from the Pyongyang Sunan Airfield area to the East Sea at 2:34 pm on the 24th, South Korea time. It is the first ICBM provocation by North Korea in four years and four months.
