The price spike was more marked during the month of February 2022 compared to previous months and recent years. According to data from the HCP, inflation in the sense of the consumer price index (CPI) reached its highest level during the month of February 2022 with 3.6% in terms of year-on-year. “This increase is mainly due to the increase in the index of food products by 5.5% and that of non-food products by 2.5%”explains the HCP in a note on inflation.
In detail, the increase noted during 2021 continued at the start of 2022. Thus, the surge in food product prices, which began in January 2021 with rates of 1.8% for oils and fats, reached double digits in February 2022 (13.7%). This increase has been noted since September 2021 on the prices of breads and cereals with 5% before accelerating to 13.2% last February.
For non-food products, the most significant increase was recorded at the level of fuels and lubricants with successive increases since April 2021. Thus, the price of diesel at the pump exceeded the level of 11 DH/litre. In February 2022, it was 22% in terms of year-on-year, notes the HCP.
