This is undoubtedly one of the most important announcements of this beginning of the week and even of this beginning of the year: CD Projekt Red has formalized the arrival of a new The Witcher. The return of the license was only an open secret, but the Polish studio shared a visual that has generated many reactions and debates among fans for three days. The communication director of CD Projekt Red has therefore just removed a central doubt around this famous medallion.
But which witcher school is it?
This is the question that has agitated all fans of The Witcher saga and Lore. Indeed, the universe of The Witcher is made up of several Schools of witchers, each with different values, creeds and stories. Each School has a medallion bearing its image:
- cat school
- the school of the griffin
- the school of the wolf
- the school of the viper
- the School of the Manticore
So, given the visual shared by CD Projekt Red, the feline head quickly conjured up Cat School in the minds of fans. In The Witcher Lore, witchers of this School are known for their sadism, irresponsibility and psychological worries. They are aggressive, cruel and unpredictable like cats.
Nevertheless, the director of global communications of CD Projekt Red revealed last night the nature of this medallion.
“Okay, some mysteries shouldn’t be so mysterious. I can confirm that the medallion is indeed in the shape of a lynx”.
This answer then raises new questions since we do not know where this School of the Lynx comes from, which has never been mentioned in the Lore of The Witcher, neither in the games, nor in the books, nor in the series. A School never mentioned except in a fan fiction published in un article du Wiki Witcher Fandom.
This fan fiction tells us that the school of the Lynx would have been founded by the wizard Lambert and the witch Keira Metz following the events of The Witcher 3, while traveling south. This school of the Lynx would in fact be the school of the Cat reformed and rehabilitated by these two wizards.
Many assumptions can then be made. Could CD Projekt Red use this fan fiction to create the story for the next game? Will there be links with previous games or the return of certain characters? Will this new saga mark a break with previous titles to focus on a new part of The Witcher’s Lore?
These are all questions that will be subject to debate and speculation over the coming months. For the moment, CD Projekt Red has only confirmed that this new opus will run on Unreal Engine 5 (the REDengine is finished) and that the visual medallion represents a lynx. In any case, be patient because the game should not show the tip of its nose for a while.
