A study by the Polytechnic University found that more than 40% of patients with new crowns have not recovered their physical fitness one year following recovery.
The research team tracked 118 COVID-19 patients from October 2020 to January this year to study their cardiopulmonary capacity, lower body strength and exercise tolerance through physical fitness assessment. It was found that regarding 42% of the patients developed fatigue syndrome within half a year of diagnosis, including brain fog, muscle aches and headaches, and regarding 40% of the patients still had fatigue syndrome one year following diagnosis.
There was no significant change in the fatigue scores of the study subjects half a year or a year following the diagnosis, and it was pointed out that the diagnosis had the greatest impact on the vital capacity and lower extremity muscle strength. The results also show that fatigue syndrome occurs in different age groups, and women are generally more likely than men.
Associate Professor Huang Yule of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at PolyU suggested that patients can gradually perform exercises of appropriate intensity and frequency to help restore physical fitness. According to the World Health Organization, you should do 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise per week.
