The Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have invited Colonel Assimi Goïta, President of the Transition of Mali to take part in the extraordinary summit of Heads of State scheduled for March 25 in Accra, Ghana, “dedicated to reviewing the evolution of the political situation in the Republic of Mali,” ECOWAS said in a statement released on Wednesday.
Mali’s transitional government on Sunday regretted the lack of compromise with the mediator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Goodluck Jonathan.
The government had indicated that “these consultations are being held following the note verbale of February 26 from the ECOWAS representation sent to the government of Mali and communicating a proposed timetable for a transition of 12 to 16 months”.
“In response, the government of the Republic of Mali deplored the fact that this ECOWAS proposal is essentially electoralist and does not take into account the legitimate aspirations for political and institutional reforms expressed by the Malian people”, underlined the same source. .
Thus, the Malian government has produced and submitted a revised timetable including actions relating to political and institutional reforms, as well as detailed actions relating to elections with a thirty-six (36) month deadline for the transition. This proposal was not accepted by the mediator, according to the government spokesman.
