Between us

Commemorate the potential and value of women had its origins in the labor movement of the mid-nineteenth century, from which women began to raise their voices and show their invaluable presence in all aspects of life. Their participation and the adoption of decisions that work in their favor is essential to provide them with greater empowerment and bring us closer to a more equitable world, which is why we share the thoughts and attitudes of eight leading women in their field: Teresa Cortina, Carla Fernández, Regina Galvanduque, Erica Valencia, Lili Álvarez, Natalia Gil Torner, Sara Galindo and Sally Azar

SALLY AZAR (DESIGNER, BUSINESSWOMAN AND FOUNDER OF HILANDO MÉXICO)

Why is it important to commemorate the month of women and continue in the search for equity?

We have come a long way and we ourselves can set the standard without feeling so different, but rather feel part of society, support each other, study more, prepare ourselves more and share our knowledge having high self-esteem, above all respecting ourselves, because everything starts from within . It is very important that every day society focuses more on education, because the more educated you are, the more you will respect women.

What do we lack as a country to promote female development?

Continue with what each one of us is doing now from our sphere, but that all of Mexico knows it, that we feel very proud and proud of being Mexicans and, through what we each have within our reach, give the best of ourselves and publicize the work of other women by supporting them with their initiatives, whether they are emerging artists or entrepreneurs, because this helps Mexico to know and recognize the work of women, respect and value it. For example, I work with artisans from more than 12 years ago and seeing how they have grown, believe in me and have overcome themselves, feeds my life, regardless of the other projects I do. In fact it is called Spinning Mexico, because we are dedicated to spinning talents, spinning dreams… spinning desires.

CARLA FERNÁNDEZ (FASHION DESIGNER)

Why commemorate the month of women and why continue to seek equality?

The fight continues and will continue until women have the same opportunities and rights. We should not be the only ones who are in charge of the children, the only ones who resolve the issues of the home. Also, our body is our choice, we decide what is best for ourselves, no one else should be giving their opinion and deciding that. I don’t know when it stopped being like that.

What do we lack as a country and society to promote female development?

We are living through a decisive moment, Jodorowsky once told me in an interview that my husband (Pedro Reyes) and I did with him in Paris, he said: ‘we are facing a new stage of humanity —just as important as the discovery of fire or the Industrial Revolution—with social media’. We must understand what the power of social networks is because we can all burn or move forward as a much better society, be a more united, committed society, where we are interested in the common good, not only thinking regarding a personal, family or family good. country. It is a good between us and everything that makes up our planet, so you have to learn to use that tool, not just throw stones that make wounds, because there comes a time when you get tired.

REGINA GALVANDUQUE ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER

Why is it important to commemorate the month of women and continue in the search for equity?

What this leads to is that today women collaborate more, they are no longer alone, that is the strength of Women’s Day, that we help each other and collaboration is in our blood.

What do we lack as a country to promote female development?

Collaboration is the keyword. The more you collaborate with teams, how you put your chips together to make a project more comprehensive, the more successful it will be. In order for a project to be strong and have a unique DNA, you need to invite people, perhaps if you will use a textile, go with the women who are doing incredible things; if it is food, approach the chefs who are consistent with your project, the more force they unite, the more solid the initiatives are.

SARA GALINDO (FASHION BUSINESSWOMAN)

Why is it important to commemorate the month of women and continue in the search for equity?

Without this commemoration, society would remain anesthetized, thinking that there is a supremacy in the gender issue, this is a reminder for society and more and more names of women are seen in high positions, in management of multinational companies, in government. .. thanks to these initiatives it brings us back to the awareness that this is an issue, although I don’t think it should be celebrated, I would love it if we didn’t have to do it or remind anyone that we are worth it, I would love it if there was no need for women Raise your hands to demand your rights, to assert yourself, so that they see you not only as women to procreate and make a family. At least it is valuable for women who have not managed to get out of the submission speech, that it makes them think regarding what her life would be like if she were not that type of woman and exploited her talent.

What do we lack as a country to promote female development?

It has a lot to do with education at home and in schools, from the mothers who educate their children, men and women. You are not who you are for nothing, it is a training issue, maybe you came to the classroom and someone said something that marked you, until you enter your house and your father tells you something that also marks you. Definitely, education has to change, trainers have to be mentally healthy people, that on the one hand, on the other the economic independence of women, financial and emotional freedom, is key, because if there is no education you don’t have it.

LILI ÁLVAREZ (GENERAL DIRECTOR OF PROMOTING MEXICAN PROFESSIONAL GOLF, IGPM)

Why commemorate the month of women and why continue to seek equity?

It is not really a day or a month, but a whole change of putting ourselves first, of breaking stereotypes and showing that we can be whatever we want: sportswoman, talking regarding my niche, activist, cook or housewife. I think the definition of being a woman is quite fluid and individual, so as long as we are calm and at peace that we don’t have to fit in we will achieve many things.

What do we lack as a country and society to promote female development?

See each other more, do an introspection and know that there is no one better than another. I think that when we help someone without seeing how we are going to take advantage of it is when we can really get ahead and impressive waves are generated. In this Mexico we lack that introspection and we really want to help each other; As for women, specifically, I think we are weaving a very beautiful network together, I am blessed to work with girls who have been very lucky, who are healthy, who are pursuing a dream and who are very brave, but we have a very great responsibility to be able to help those who are living very complicated stories, because there are many battles and each one fights them from their perspective, but there are some very difficult ones, we are living in a country with terrible gender violence, I am a northerner and at the borders the issue of femicide is tremendous, that is where, for me, sport comes in, because physical activity complements mental health and empowers women, a feeling that is transmitted.

TERESA CORTINA (DESIGNER AND CREATOR OF MINAHUA)

Why commemorate the month of women and why continue to seek equality?

The figure of my mother was a reference in my life, a brave, talented, strong, beautiful and successful woman, but, at the same time, absent due to the circumstances that forced her to support and raise her four children, her family . Without a career or any preparation, she won the first fashion award in Mexico and her designs transcended borders. She was a woman who broke the mold of her time by coming from an ultra-conservative family. Her story has led me to recognize in women an unparalleled potential, which has been ignored even by ourselves. Intrinsically we have a transforming power that lies in our feminine essence, which comes from our nature, beyond the “place” that we are given in society. In order for others to appreciate this value, it is important to begin by recognizing it in ourselves. It is up to each woman to discover it, take advantage of it and make it count for her own benefit and that of our society.

How is the personality and act of a woman who breaks schemes?

It is the one that does not allow itself to be dazzled by fashions or follow established rules. She is the one who can look inside herself and discover who she really is, the one who recognizes and accepts her strengths and weaknesses, tracing her own path without having to prove anything. She is the one who knows how to see and listen to follow the signs of life, because true power does not come from outside, it lies in each person.
