Filling up in Luxembourg, still really advantageous this Saturday? Take the test with our calculator

Gasoline and diesel prices have soared in recent weeksto the point of reaching unprecedented heights of 2.286 euros for diesel on March 11.

What give the idea to many Belgians to fill up in Luxembourg to save a few euros: the weekend of March 12-13, the difference for diesel was almost 60 cents per litre!

But with consumption, was it really advantageous to consume fuel just to refuel? According to our calculation, for a full 40 liters, and taking into account a round trip to the pump, you had to live less than 75 kilometers away for this to be advantageous. The shorter the distance (or the detour), and the larger the reservoir, the greater the gain.

The tool above, which is updated automatically every morning, allows you to do the calculation with the latest maximum prices available.

You can add to this amount of fuel the contents of a 10-litre jerrycan, the maximum quantity tolerated by customs : the transport of fuel is in principle reserved for vehicles specialized in the transport of dangerous materials.

The maximum diesel price in Belgium fell this Saturday to 1.904 euros/litrewhile it is 1.761 euro/litre in Luxembourg: the detour therefore becomes minimal to still record a real gain.
