The Minister of Energy and Water, Walid Fayyad, met the Qatari Minister of Energy on the sidelines of the seventh general conference of the Arab Electricity Union in Doha, Qatar, and they discussed energy affairs in general, Lebanon’s needs in particular, and the possibility and opportunities to help the Qatari side to Lebanon.
The meeting dealt with the major changes in the market in light of the recent emerging crisis, where prices have risen and fluctuated dramatically and rapidly, and it will take a long time for price stability to return.
Secondly, under the current circumstances, the demand for Qatari gas has increased a lot, as in addition to the increase in demand from Asia and the East, there are many requests from European countries and the West in general, which leads to an increase in demand for gasification and floating storage units FSRU.
In view of this volatile reality in light of the changes, the Qatari side finds that for Lebanon it is appropriate for everyone to launch a new tender due to Lebanon’s need for gas, especially in light of the global changes taking place, and therefore it is encouraged to prepare for a tender in order to import gas, knowing that we have a station located in Zahrani that needs To gas as the first stage, provided that it will be the second stage to secure gas for the station, which will be built according to the marked master plan by EDF.
It was also encouraged that the new tender should be on encouraging terms for the participants, since the market is subject today to strong and widespread competition, as the demand is large and the supply is few, which confirms the necessity of stimulating and appropriate conditions for the participants that are also feasible.
