In an effort to allow users to legally share accounts with family members who do not live with them, Netflix has announced it is testing a new fee plan, as well as offering new features to help them transfer personal data to new accounts. Many users now share their Netflix account and password with others. This practice violates the terms of use and may lead to account blocking. The new plan allows users to add non-resident family members to the account at a lower cost.
Tested first in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, existing Netflix subscribers can add one non-resident family member to an existing account for regarding US$3 (equivalent to HK$23.5) per month, and each account can add up to two non-resident members family. Netflix also provides a personal data transfer tool that allows users to transfer existing personal data, such as browsing history, favorite videos, personal recommendations, etc., to the newly opened account. The new fee plans and transfer tools described above are also available to users of the Basic, Standard and Premium plans.
Netflix emphasizes that investing in shows and movies requires a lot of money, and they point out that users sharing account numbers and passwords not only violate the terms of use, but also seriously affect their income. Temporarily, the new charging plan will be first tested in three American countries, and it is estimated that there will be opportunities to implement it in other countries in the future.
