Israeli police said Saturday they opened fire on a Palestinian assailant who stabbed a passerby in Jerusalem and “neutralized” him.

“Jerusalem District police fired to incapacitate the suspect,” police said in a statement. Magen David Adom emergency services said the stabbing victim was a slightly injured Israeli in his 30s. The assailant is a Palestinian in his 20s and was evacuated “in serious condition”, according to Israeli relief spokesman Zaki Heller. An AFP journalist saw police recover the assailant’s bloodied clothes. The attack took place in West Jerusalem, near the junction with the eastern sector of the city. Clashes frequently erupt in Jerusalem, a city at the heart of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.

Recurrent violence

Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and Israel have been the theater since October 2015 and for months of anti-Israeli attacks, most often committed by young isolated Palestinians. This violence has since diminished in intensity, but persists sporadically. In early March, Israeli police said they killed an assailant who stabbed two officers in Jerusalem’s Old City.

More than 300,000 Palestinians and 210,000 Israelis live today in East Jerusalem, in the part occupied and annexed by Israel since 1967. Israeli colonization, illegal under international law, has continued under all governments Israelis since 1967.
