At least 22 people were killed and 38 others injured in a collision between a passenger coach and a truck in eastern Tanzania on Friday, the Tanzanian presidency announced.

Reckless driving

The accident took place around 4:30 p.m. local time (1:30 p.m. GMT) near the town of Melela Kibaoni, in the Morogoro region, regarding 200 km west of the economic capital Dar es Salaam, the presidency said. “The driver of the truck, which was traveling from the port of Dar es Salaam to the Democratic Republic of Congo, was passing a motorcycle when the two vehicles collided head-on,” said Morogoro regional police official Fortunatus Muslim. attributing the origin of the accident to the careless driving of the driver.

Head of State Samia Suluhu Hassan offered her condolences to those bereaved by the accident, in a statement released by the presidency on Friday evening. “Saddened by the death of (these) 22 people”, she also urged “road users to respect traffic rules” in a message on Twitter. On Monday, four people were killed in another road accident involving a bus traveling between the town of Tunduma (southwest), bordering Zambia, to the economic capital Dar es Salaam.
