Nine people were killed when two vehicles caught fire due to the impact of the thunder. Two people were rescued and taken to the University Medical Center in Lamp. Attempts to save others from the blazing fire failed.

The accident happened as the team, which consisted of female and male players and a coach, was returning to New Mexico in a mini van following a match in the Midlands, Texas. In addition to the 13-year-old in the pickup truck, a 38-year-old passenger was also killed.
