What to do in the garden in spring?

Planting, restoring the beauty of the lawn, starting the vegetable garden… Here are all the things you need to do in the spring to prepare your garden for the summer.

What have you planned for the weekend? The weather forecast is calling for glorious weather so you might take the opportunity to work in the garden. If this is the case, that’s good because there are plenty of things to do for prepare for the arrival of spring!

Sow summer plants and flowers and plant spring ones

With the arrival of a new season, it’s the right time to spruce up your garden, terrace or balcony. Be careful, however, not to plant anything because the Ice Saints have not yet passed and it is not uncommon to see its flowers freeze by then. In Marchso you can plant bulbs that will bloom in summer (astilbes, Spanish lilacs, roses), from climbersfrom perennial plant already in bloom (columbines, yarrow, bellflowers, delphinium, heart of Mary, forget-me-nots) and evergreen shrubs. In April, once the big frosts have passed, you can sow brachycomas, poppies, amaranths, agastaches, columbines, sunflowers and anthemis. In May, it’s the turn of amaryllis and water hyacinth to be buried. And in June, you can switch to sage, marigolds, dahliasetc.

Before planting the bulbs, you first need to lightly bury them in a pot with moist potting soil. Add some slow-release fertilizer pellets to give them a boost! To do this, immerse the tubers in the ground with the concave part up. Leave the pots in the dark until you see the first shoots. Then put them in the light or outside once the last frosts have passed.

Restart the vegetable garden

It’s time to restart your vegetable garden! Clean it, dig the soil and add green manure. If the temperature is favorable and if the frosts have passed, you can put the early vegetables in the ground: potatoes, carrots, radishes, parsnips, shallots, peas, garlic, cucumbers… Also start your seedlings spring and summer fruits and vegetables: peppers, tomatoes, broad beans, strawberries, aubergines, courgettes… Wait until May to plant the seedlings in the ground.

Get your lawn in order

The garden retains traces of the passage of a storm or other inclement weather. For example, the lawn has earth holes. To remedy this and give it a second life, give it a renovating mixture, also called relining or repair. Start by removing moss, weeds and mow the damaged part as much as possible. Then scrape the soil with a rake, then distribute the seeds, pass the roller to impregnate the soil with the seeds and water abundantly. Wait a month and your lawn will be like new!
