Indoor Worlds: Noor Vidts takes gold after achieving a perfect pentathlon

Noor Vidts performed a perfect pentathlon at the World Indoor Athletics Championships. She won the gold medal by achieving a perfect pentathlon, which she led from start to finish and where she achieved a total of 4929 points and became the sixth best performer in history in indoor pentathlon.

Noor Vidts was facing his destiny before this 800m. At the head of the pentathlon, she had all the cards in hand to become world champion. She starts this 800m calmly by following her opponent on the first meters. At the start of the last lap, the Belgian accelerated and took over the two athletes who were in front of her and flew to victory, even beating Nafi Thiam’s Belgian record by achieving a magnificent 2:08.81. She garnered 982 points and reached a total of 4929 which places her in sixth place among the best performers in history in indoor pentathlon.

The silver medal goes to Adrianna Sulek with 4851 points and the American Kendell Williams leaves with the bronze (4680 points). Katarina Johnson-Thompson did not take part in the 800m. Not yet in good enough shape, the American might no longer claim a place on the podium.

Noor Vidts continued the pentathlon of the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Belgrade by achieving the second-best jump in the long jump competition with a jump to 6.60m, his all-time best performance indoors. She was only beaten by the American Williams who jumped at 6m69 (1069 points).

Noor Vidts had a very nice competition, jumping from her first jump at 6m60, before performing jumps at 6m55 and 6m33 and racking up 1040. She retained the lead in the pentathlon with a total of 3947 units. The Polish Adrianna Sulek retains his second place with 3880 points following jumping 6m43 (985 points), his best performance. The American Chari Hawkins who was third lost everything in this long jump competition by biting her three attempts and losing any chance of a podium. It is the other American, Kendell Williams, height of the best jump who rises to third place with 3846 points. Katarina Johnson-Thompson confirms that she has not yet returned to her best level and has only jumped 6m08 (874 points) and is in sixth position.

With a mark of 14m03 in the shot put, the Belgian garnered 796 points, which allowed her to take the lead of the competition with 2907 points following three events. Vidts is 13 small units ahead of Poland’s Adrianna Sulek who only threw her shot at 13m40 and recovered 754 points. American Chari Hawkins is still in third place. She achieved her best performance of the season in the shot put by throwing at 14m02 (795 points) and totals 2886 units.

Noor Vidts was in second place following the high jump where she had cleared 1m83. After crossing 1m68, 1m71, 1m74, 1m77, 1m80 and 1m83 on the 1st try, the Belgian failed three times at 1m86. She finished 2nd in the height whose competition was removed by the European champion Espoirs (U23) Adrianna Sulek. The Pole stopped at 1m89 (1,093 points) and took the lead in the competition with 2,141 points.

Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson, a great height specialist, disappointed once more as she stopped at 1m83 (1,016 points). The defending champion was still up from 8th to 6th place and now occupies fifth place with 2773 points following achieving her best performance of the season in the shot put (13m02).

Noor Vidts’ personal best height remains at 1m84 and dates from February 16, 2019 in Antequera, Spain. She had erased a bar of 1m83 during her record pentathlon at the last Indoor Euro in Torun. She kept her 17-point lead on her record, thanks to her 8.15 in the 60m hurdles at the opening of the world pentathlon.
