Clever, a clever motorist “trapped” Carrefour by paying 17 euros for his full tank of gas instead of 90.

The sharp rise in the price of oil over the past three weeks has led to an explosion in prices at the pump. Faced with this surge in prices, all ideas to save a few euros are welcome. Near Rouen, a motorist has managed the feat of paying his full tank of gas 17 euros instead of 90 legally, tell our colleagues fromNormandy News.

To achieve his ends, Maxime took Carrefour’s slogan literally “if you find it cheaper elsewhere, we’ll refund you the difference”. On March 15, he noticed price differences between service stations in the town of Mont-Saint-Aignan (Seine-Maritime). That day, Carrefour’s diesel is displayed twenty cents more expensive than the competition. To obtain reimbursement for part of his full tank, the Norman must bring back proof that a service station within a radius of 5 kilometers from Carrefour offers a more attractive price. Important clarification, the Carrefour website indicated that the store reimbursed twice the difference when the Norman supermarket promised to pay “ten times the difference”.

Carrefour cancels its offer

Determined, Maxime drives a few kilometers to fill up his tank at Total before returning to Carrefour with his receipt proving his good faith and finishing his tank. “We calculated the difference between the price per liter at Total, and their price per liter. On my fill-up, it was 7.30 euros. They (the managers, editor’s note) multiplied the amount by ten”, specifies Maxime to Actu Normandy with a smile on their face. In total, Carrefour reimbursed him 73 euros out of the 90 euros spent to refuel.

His little scheme quickly spread, forcing the French food distribution giant to react quickly. Since Maxime’s visit to the service station, Carrefour has repealed this rule.
