It was expected but the announcement will, despite everything, have an important echo. Samsung now markets OLED TVs under its own brand. These new TVs use QD-OLED, a competing technology to LG’s W-OLED.
We strongly expected the launch of OLED TVs for Samsung Electronics, but we especially expected a formalization during an important event like a Samsung Unpacked. In fact, Samsung USA has just listed two new OLED models on its official website, they are already on sale.
The QD-OLED operated by Samsung Electronics
We talk regarding technology QD-OLED (Quantum Dot-Organic Light Emitting Diode) from Samsung Display since 2019. This technology was introduced on two products presented at CES in January 2022, a Sony TV and a Dell Alienware monitor. Oddly, Samsung Electronics hadn’t announced anything, despite persistent noise from the hallway.
It took until March 2022 to discover the first OLED televisions from Samsung Electronics. Technically, these are not the first, the Korean brand had already succumbed to OLED long before LG made it its flagship technology.
In short, Samsung therefore introduces the S95B models in 55 and 65 inches. These are 4K UHD TVs that cost $2400 and $3500 respectively. We are therefore faced with more expensive products than OLED TVs from LG Electronics. Samsung highlights the Neural Quantum Processor, the Quantum HDR, the Dolby Atoms, the LaserSlim design or even its in-house OS Tizen. There’s also the Motion Xcelerator Turbo+, which promises to be able to play at 120Hz in 4K.
Quantum HDR refers to the HDR capabilities of certain Samsung QLED TVs which are capable of displaying content in HDR10+ format. Since the term OLED is already widely known and understood, Samsung has decided to use the nomenclature Samsung OLED TV to avoid consumer confusion. Samsung will therefore not speak of QD-OLED, even if it is indeed a QD-OLED panel that is used.
We can’t wait to find out what makes Samsung’s QD-OLED different from LG’s W-OLED. We are talking regarding a greater peak in brightness but also richer colors.
After seeing the Sony A95K, which uses QD-OLED technology, we might see the presence of a higher dynamic range on the new panel. The colors appear more intense and the image appears slightly sharper. Pending further tests, however, we have not observed any difference in brightness between the two OLED technologies.
For the moment, Samsung does not mention any technical figures. We will have to wait for the first tests, as well as an officialization in Europe. Samsung USA is the only subsidiary to have formalized these new models.
After an official announcement at the CES show in Las Vegas last January, we were able to see the Sony XR-65A95K television in action during a demonstration session. The conditions being a bit…
