“The sky is cut in two, it’s magnificent”: what is this celestial phenomenon observed this Thursday?

Many of you marvel at the celestial spectacle this Thursday. Via our orange button, Maïte writes to us: “The sky is cut in two. It’s magnificent”. “Magnificent effects of the sky, what is this phenomenon?”, asks Arnaud.

At the beginning of the evening, the sky was suddenly covered with clouds revealing a clear line of demarcation. The sky thus appears as “cut in two”. According to information reported by the Association Météo Center on its twitter account and identified by the French site Actu.fr, this phenomenon is due to two parameters: a thick layer of clouds as well as the plume of Saharan dust which stretches for several thousand kilometres. Coupled, these two elements thus form this celestial spectacle.

Because indeed a thin layer of sand from the Sahara fell on our country. Storms in the Sahara desert create gusty winds on the surface of the ground, which kick up particles of sand and dust. The smallest particles remain in the air thanks to a temperature difference between the hot air above and the ground, which cools, while the heavier ones fall back.
