The proceeds of the first auction dedicated to surrealist painters in Paris amounted to about 33 million euros, including ten million for a painting by Francis Picabia, a record price for his works.
“We are proud to have set a new world record for Picabia,” said Sotheby’s auction manager Thomas Bombard.
The painting “Pavonia”, which dates back to 1929 and is considered one of Picabia’s most famous paintings, was sold for ten million euros, breaking the previous record for the artist’s work of eight million euros.
As for the painting “Bare Back”, which was completed by Picabia between 1940 and 1942, it was sold for 3.3 million euros.
