New warnings issued by health experts regarding the long-term repercussions of people infected with the Corona virus, who may contract serious diseases later.
A study found that people who were infected with the Corona virus were 28 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, according to the British newspaper, “The Sun.”
Diabetes affects hundreds of millions around the world, and it is a disease that results in the body’s inability to properly process sugar or carbohydrates from food.
Doctors at Heinrich Heine University in Germany said that the swelling caused by the immune reaction to the Corona virus can destroy cells that produce insulin, the hormone that controls the absorption of sugar.
In a study of 35,865 people who tested positive for the virus, they found that the risk of developing type 2 diabetes was 28 percent higher than that of people who did not have the virus.
Professor Wolfgang Rathmann said: “Covid-19 infection may lead to diabetes by regulating the immune system.”
“Patients may be at risk of developing diabetes due to obesity or prediabetes, and the stress that the coronavirus has put on their bodies has accelerated this.”
He said weight gain and lack of exercise during the lockdown may have made the problem worse, both of which are known to increase diabetes risk.
