Thomas Aeschi, faction leader of the SVP, caused an uproar in parliament on Wednesday during a debate on the war in Ukraine.
During an urgent debate on the war in Ukraine on Wednesday, SVP faction leader Thomas Aeschi demanded that Switzerland send Ukrainians from third countries back to their countries of origin. “It is unacceptable for Nigerians or Iraqis with Ukrainian passports to suddenly rape 18-year-old Ukrainian women!” He asked Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter (PLR) to ensure that “only Ukrainians who are really Ukrainians” come to Switzerland.
The words of the Agrarian politician were quick to arouse strong reactions on social networks.
‘Horrible’ and ‘disgusting’
“Who should I ask to make sure Thomas Aeschi keeps his racist ideas to himself?” wrote one user on Twitter. Other Internet users sum up the speech of the national councilor (UDC / ZG) as being “horrible” or “repulsive”. A surfer criticizes in particular the fact that he can “freely tell racist bullshit” to the National and that the left is mostly silent on the subject.
Various elected officials also reacted to the words of the Zugois. The elected Marianne Binder-Keller (Center / AG) thus affirms: “These sentences have no place in the National Council. They generalize a group of people. A crime is a crime no matter who commits it. For her part, National Councilor Tamara Funiciello (PS/BE) declares: “Mr. Aeschi is abusing the situation to stir up racism. The SVP would do well to present something targeted for once.
National Councilor Léonore Porchet (Greens / VD) also reacted with disgust. She posted a vomiting smiley just before transcribing Thomas Aeschi’s speech on her Twitter account.
When questioned, Thomas Aeschi defended his statements: “I was alerted by a recent case that occurred in Düsseldorf.” According to German media, an Iraqi and a Nigerian of Ukrainian nationality allegedly raped an 18-year-old Ukrainian girl on a Düsseldorf hotel boat in early March.
The Zugois nevertheless assures that he had no intention of casting general suspicion on the Iraqis and Nigerians. But according to him, this case would show that among Ukrainian citizens there are also criminals from third countries.
Do not accept these asylum seekers
“Since there is no war in Iraq or Nigeria, it is right that we do not accept these people as asylum seekers, even if they have a second Ukrainian nationality in addition to their original nationality, but that we send them back to their country of origin.”
Moreover, by accepting the initiative on deportation, the Swiss people had already clearly decided in 2010 that criminal asylum seekers should automatically leave Switzerland, he recalls.
