[Second case in the world]26-week-old fetus with heart tumor returned to mother following surgery
A team of doctors at the Cleveland Clinic, a specialized medical center in the United States, performed a rare and state-of-the-art operation on a 26-week-old fetus in May 2021. A mother-to-be was found to have a tumor growing inside her fetus’ heart during a routine ultrasound at the hospital. This has serious consequences for the fetus, as the malignant mass compresses the left heart of the fetus, obstructing blood circulation, causing fluid to accumulate in his heart and other organs. Finally, ten weeks following the operation, the fetus was born healthy and weighed regarding 6 pounds 4 ounces following surgery at 36 weeks.
