During the month of March, the Los Girasoles restaurant will be donating part of its profits to the Fundación Origen. Chef Marco González told us regarding this work, the history and legends of the place, and its unmissable dishes.
The restaurant Los Girasoles was founded in 1994is located in Xicoténcatl # 1, corner with Tacuba, in front of the statue “El Caballito”, by Manuel Tolsá. The property has a privileged location: It is surrounded by the National Art Museum, the Telegraph Museum and the Mining Palace.
Like many of the buildings in the Center, its historical value is invaluable: it served as a hospital, the Franciscan Hospital San Andrés, there was embalmed, for the second time, the body of Maximilian of Habsburg. And of course there are many paranormal stories to tell, as Chef reveals.
“I have had to hear voices, knock on my door, even turn on the knobs on the stove, it is already part of everyday life. At night I entrust those souls with the place and that’s it”
“A table with a cause” arose from the need of the chef and the public relations and marketing teams for help a social cause that supports vulnerable women in the country.
“The initiative consists in that throughout March, 5% of the profits obtained at the restaurant’s terrace tables will be collected, and it will be sent to the Origen Foundation, for the support of the women who need it most”
Chef Maco González tells us more regarding the dishes that we can find this season on the menu of the Mexican food restaurant:
“One of the dishes I like the most is the chili coin, which has its origins in the 1920s, on Moneda street in downtown Mexico City. It is a representation of Chile en Nogada present throughout the year, it consists of a ancho chili stuffed with ground beef and dried fruit over a sweet, nutty sauce similar to nogada”.
Every month the chef inserts seasonal dishes into the menu, in July, for example, it will bring typical Oaxacan dishes commemorating the La Guelaguetza festivaland also some others from the San Marcos Fair.
Value added to Los Girasoles
In the room called “Los Arcos” they have created a gallery space in which is currently an exhibition of the Oaxacan plastic artist Felix Monterrosa.
They also have a painting signed by the handwriting of Jose Luis Cuevaswhich he recognized on some occasion that he dined at Los Girasoles.
In 2015, the movie 007 Specter was filmed in Mexico City and the rooftop of Los Girasoles was used to record one of the action scenes starring James Bond (Daniel Craig). Chef González tells us more regarding it.
“Many people come to eat for that reason, others just ask us to come in to take a photo where the scene was filmed or next to the film plate, national and international tourists”
