Feminist groups gather to “monitor” the actions of parliamentarians and “avoid a regression” of women’s rights

Through his Twitter account, the President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso, partially vetoed the abortion bill in cases of rape that was approved by the National Assembly and that would allow women who became pregnant as a result of rape to interrupt the pregnancy in a certain period of time.

The project approved by the Plenary of the Assembly may be practiced up to 12 weeks of gestation with the exception of girls, adolescents and women from rural and intercultural areas, since for them the term is extended to 18 weeks.

In a statement, Lasso made 61 observations on the document where he indicates that “the objective is that it be in absolute agreement with the ruling of the CC (Constitutional Court). There are two clear provisions in the sentence that have not been followed by the Assembly, or that are not consistent with our legal framework,” he says.

Lasso asks that the deadlines be unified in all cases to 12 weeks. What’s more. points out that the Assembly has forgotten the “conscientious objection and therefore wants to “include articles that guarantee all health professionals the application of this constitutional principle.”

Now the bill will return to the National Assembly, which will have 30 to decide whether to maintain the original text or accept the proposal of the Presidency of the Republic.
