Copenhagen intends to tighten the screws on tobacco, especially with regard to young people. The country will increase the age limit to buy it and do the same with alcohol.
Denmark announced on Tuesday a tobacco-free plan for the new generation, envisaging a ban on the sale of nicotine products to anyone born from 2010 onwards. in 2010 and following never start smoking or using nicotine products,” Health Minister Magnus Heunicke said. “If necessary, we are ready to ban sales to this generation by gradually raising the age limit at which it can be purchased.”
Current regulations prohibit Danes under the age of 18 from buying tobacco or smoking e-cigarettes. Nevertheless, 31% of 15-29 year olds smoke, the minister stressed, and smoking, the leading cause of cancer in the Nordic country, causes 13,600 deaths per year in this state of 5.8 million inhabitants.
According to a survey commissioned by the Danish Cancer Association, 64% of respondents are in favor of the plan. They are 67% among 18-34 year olds.
Pioneering New Zealand
A pioneer in the fight once morest smoking, New Zealand announced in December that it wanted to gradually ban the sale of tobacco by increasing, from 2027, the age at which it can be purchased.
In Denmark, the Social Democratic government also intends to tackle alcohol consumption among young people. In particular, it will raise the age limit for the purchase of alcoholic beverages to 18, compared to 16 years previously for all beverages containing less than 16.5% alcohol.
