Thousands leave Mariupol, Russia and Ukraine are negotiating again

Evacuations from Mariupol

According to the authorities, people from Mariupol have meanwhile gotten to safety in around 2,000 cars. The vehicles followed the route to the central Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia, the city council said. Another 2,000 cars were waiting on the outskirts. 160 cars had left the city on Monday.

A convoy carrying dozens of tons of aid and empty buses destined for the Mariupol evacuation was stuck in nearby Berdyanks, according to Ukrainian sources.

Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk accused the Moscow government of falsely claiming to abide by evacuation agreements. Convoys of private cars are not enough to get people to safety. Instead, buses should be allowed through, emphasized Wereschtschuk.
