The official announcement from Equinor comes four days following CEO Anders Obedal told Archyde.com that the company had stopped dealing in Russian oil.
“When we said we wanted to start exiting (from the Russian joint venture), we also stopped from that date on dealing in Russian oil,” Obidal said.
On Monday, Equinor added that it has obligations under contracts it entered into prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, under which it will receive four oil shipments in March.
The company said the receipt of these shipments would be “in full compliance with existing sanctions”.
On February 28, a few days following the invasion, Equinor said it was exiting its joint ventures with Russia’s Rosneft, expecting to write off its $1.2 billion holdings.
Equinor joins major oil and gas companies that have halted oil purchases from Russia, including Shell, BP, France’s Total Energies and Italian energy group Eni.
