Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer in women aged 30 to 49, but few of them feel as concerned. Women under 50 do not have access to preventive screening for this type of cancer.
Breast cancer is also the leading cause of death from cancer among Quebec women aged 30 to 49 (17%).
“Over the past few years, we have noticed at the Foundation that younger and younger women are being diagnosed with breast cancer. The situation is worrying […]. This is all the more important since breast cancer is usually more aggressive in young women,” said Karine-Iseult Ippersiel, President and CEO of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation (FCSQ). ).
It is with the aim of further informing the young population that the FCSQ launched on Monday the awareness campaign “It’s not just a matante’s cancer. Look at your breasts, you’re not too young. The campaign with the powerful title reminds us that this disease does not only affect older women.
When detected at an early stage, breast cancer has a five-year survival rate of 99%. Thus we aim to sensitize young women to practice observation at home in order to detect any anomaly.
“Breast observation is essential for women’s health. Don’t take it for granted that it just happens to others. The younger you are, the more aggressive it is, the more important it is. Two minutes in your week. It can save your life,” explained Émilie Jubinville, a young woman who beat breast cancer at the age of 27.
According to Statistics Canada, if the trend continues, one in eight women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime and one in 34 women will die from this disease.
