Lewis Hamilton told Expo 2020 in Dubai today that he plans to change his name and incorporate his mother’s surname.
Hamilton said the change would happen “soon”, possibly as early as this year. Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton, his current full name, might become Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton-Larbalestier, or in shortened version: Lewis Hamilton-Larbalestier
“It would mean a lot to my family. I’m really proud of my family name, Hamilton. None of you may know my mother’s name is Larbalestier, and I’m regarding to put that in my name. “
“Because I don’t really understand the idea that when people get married, the woman loses her name.”
“For my mother, I really want her name to carry on with the name Hamilton.”
Hamilton also spoke regarding his relationship with his father, who he described as a “tough parent” when he was younger.
“When I first won a Grand Prix in 2007, I remember looking down and seeing my dad smiling at me and that was really, really deep for me because he was a very, very tough parent. Not particularly the most loving because he felt like he always had to be that solid rock. But in that moment, I knew I made him proud.”
