LUXEMBOURG – The government announced on Monday the extension of financial aid for electric mobility and active mobility until March 2024.

The government has strengthened financial aid for the purchase of an electric vehicle by broadening their application criteria and extending them until March 2024. “We want family cars to also be able to benefit from this aid and encourage people to do this transition to electromobility,” said Carole Dieschbourg, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development.

The bonus of 8,000 euros, which only concerned vehicles whose consumption does not exceed 18 kWh/100 km, now also concerns electric vehicles whose consumption does not exceed 20 kWh/100 km, provided that the maximum power of the system is less than or equal to 150 kilowatts.

Otherwise, above 18 kWh/100 km, the premium is reduced to 3,000 euros. A bonus of 1000 euros is paid for vehicles of the quadricycle, motorcycle and moped type. Finally, 600 euros are allocated for electrically assisted bicycles. As a reminder, these premiums are paid directly to the consumer.

The government has also extended the minimum vehicle ownership period from 7 to 12 months. A measure which aims to deal with certain observed abuses. However, to take into account the extension of delivery times, the government has granted an extension of the first registration deadline until December 31, 2022 for plug-in hybrid vehicles ordered until September 30, 2021.

In 2021, electric cars (100% electric and plug-in hybrids) accounted for more than 20% of new registrations in Luxembourg (9,092 registered vehicles). Over the past three years, more than 30 million euros in state aid have been paid for the purchase of a 100% electric or rechargeable hybrid vehicle, according to the Ministry of the Environment.
